Rankli vs Surfer
Surfer is an established SEO content platform — now part of Positive — that sells document optimisation and AI-visibility tracking rather than a publishing pipeline. Comparing it to Rankli is comparing two different purchases: they help a writer make a page rank, we write and publish the page. The one row where we genuinely overlap is AI-answer visibility, and their tracking is the more mature of the two.
We are new. Rankli is new. We have no public customer results, no case studies and no star ratings, and we are not going to borrow anyone else’s. Everything claimed about Rankli below is a rule or a limit in the running product; everything claimed about the other product was read off their own live page on the date stamped above.
5 rows we could check on Surfer’s own pages.
A row appears here only when both sides of it are stated somewhere a reader can go and read. Where Surfer’s pages say nothing, the row is missing rather than filled in with a guess.
| What | Rankli | Surfer |
|---|---|---|
| Cheapest way in | $1 once for the Trial — 3 finished articles, nothing renews. The cheapest subscription is Starter at $89/month. | Discovery at $49/month billed yearly, which their page describes as creating or optimising 120 documents and tracking 10 pages. |
| Free tier or trial | No free tier. The $1 Trial is a one-time charge that buys 3 articles on your own site plus one measurement round; trial drafts carry a one-line watermark. | Every plan on the page carries a "Start for Free" button. |
| Internal linking | 2–5 contextual links to your own pages, checked by the same scorer that can hold the draft. It advises instead of blocking when your site has fewer than two article-like URLs to link to. | 1-click internal linking is listed from the Pro plan at $182/month billed yearly. |
| AI-answer visibility tracking | On every plan, including the Trial: 20–1,200 tracked questions across 4 engines, 6–8 runs each. From Growth up they run as pre-registered experiments against a held-out control. | Standard ($99/month billed yearly) tracks 25 AI prompts refreshed weekly; Pro ($182) tracks 50 refreshed daily; Peace of Mind ($299) tracks 100 daily; a dedicated AI Search Analytics plan ($158) tracks 100 daily with Mention Gap and Brand Sentiments. |
| Add-ons on top of the plan price | None. One price per plan, no annual plan, no volume discount and no crossed-out anchor price. A promotion code at checkout is the only discount that exists. | Plan tiers rather than add-ons: Discovery $49, Standard $99, Pro $182, Peace of Mind $299 and AI Search Analytics $158, all billed yearly, with Enterprise at $999/month on tailored packages. |
What we left out, and why
- Articles a month, publishing destinations, article length, images, backlinks and a pre-publish gate. Surfer sells documents created or optimised, not articles published to your CMS, so these rows have no counterpart on their page and are left out rather than filled in.
- Monthly rather than yearly prices. Every figure on their page we could read is marked "Billed yearly", so that is how it is quoted here.
- Keyword volume and difficulty figures, and where reported results come from.
None of these is a claim that Surfer lacks the feature. It is a claim that we could not read it on their site, which is a different and much smaller statement.
When Surfer is the better choice.
- They are an established brand with a long track record, published case studies and ISO 27001 certification. We are new, have no customers yet, and have none of that.
- AI-visibility tracking at a scale we do not match on the entry plans: 100 prompts refreshed daily on their $158 AI Search Analytics plan, with Mention Gap and brand sentiment. Our Starter tracks 80 questions monthly.
- They are far better at the job of improving pages you already have — cannibalisation reports, coverage gaps, SERP analysis, one-click optimisation. We only write new articles.
- Every plan starts free, and their entry tier is $49 against our $89.
- An API, MCP, team collaboration and a plagiarism checker. We ship none of those.
When Rankli is.
- We write and publish the article. Surfer optimises a document you bring; if nobody on your team is going to write it, the optimisation never happens.
- Measurement above Starter is a pre-registered experiment against a held-out control, so a change in citations can be attributed rather than observed.
- The publish gate: a hard SEO failure, including a fabricated statistic, holds the draft rather than letting it reach your domain.
Each of these is a rule in the running product — the publish gate, the fabricated-statistic detector and the propose-and-accept editor are code, not positioning, and the pricing page states the limits they enforce.
The questions this page is meant to answer.
Are Surfer and Rankli even competitors?
Only partly, and it is worth being honest about that. They sell optimisation and AI-visibility tracking to people who write; we sell the writing, the publishing and the measurement over it. Plenty of teams would sensibly buy Surfer and not us.
Why are all their prices marked "billed yearly"?
Because that is how their pricing page showed them on the day we read it. We have not converted them to a monthly figure, because that would be our arithmetic rather than their price.
Read three of them before you decide.
$1 once buys 3 finished articles on your own site, in your own voice, plus one measurement round. Nothing renews, and if the writing is not right you will know within a week.
