How it works

Three steps, no account

  1. Step 1: Give it the keyword

The phrase you want the page to rank for. An audience is optional.

  2. Step 2: Ten titles, ten counts

Each title contains the keyword and comes with its real character count. Titles over 60 are shown as over 60 rather than quietly dropped — with a long keyword, that is the finding.

  3. Step 3: Copy and check

Paste your favourite into the page title, then run the finished article through the checker.

Frequently asked questions

Why 60 characters?

A search result gives a title roughly 600 pixels, which works out at about 60 characters for typical text. Past that it is cut, and a title cut in the middle of your keyword is the same as not having written it.

Why are some titles longer than 60?

Because your keyword is long. We show the count rather than truncating a title into something you did not ask for — the useful information is that the keyword itself needs shortening in the title.

Where are the "top 10" and "best" titles?

Left out. A superlative is a claim about content that does not exist yet, and a number in a title is a promise the article has to keep. Add either once yours does.

Should the keyword be at the start?

Usually. A truncated result still shows the first few words, so a front-loaded subject survives the cut. That is one of the eight things the headline checker measures.
